Midterm Reflection

My original intentions for this class were to get acquainted with as much new machinery as possible. However, what I learned, in reality, is probably much more valuable.  Although I have learned about laser cutting and other machine making methods I have learned much more about hand-making and working with simple tools. I now find this much more important because if you can use a handheld tool efficiently you can use the power tool with that much more understanding and efficiency. It also allows you to not be reliant on the power tools because they can get crowded or even in a worst-case scenario there may be no power at all. The landmarks of this transformation are definitely Chris Nguyen's workshops. He blew my mind multiple times with the speed, quality and random helpful tricks hand-held tools provide. To this day I can't stop thinking about how he taught me to subdivide an object that wasn't an even number of inches by rotating a ruler. Taking these skills and applying them myself in the making center has helped me grow for sure and I am definitely more comfortable working with my hands now. I think the only roadblocks were when I couldn't acquire material right away.

In the future, I would like to continue working with wood and all the tools I've been learning about. In particular, I want to learn more about hardwood and joinery. My intentions have definitely shifted away from the detachment of automated making methods towards the personal connection of working with my hands. This idea shift was for sure also motivated by the book I chose to read this semester "Shop Class as Soulcraft: An Inquiry into the Value of Work". The book very much so spoke to me about the degradation of hand made work in today's world and why it is important to preserve this art by practicing it. To support me in my endeavors I would love more time set loose in the making center just working on whatever project is assigned.
